Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Topic for Feb. 3 Humanist Sunday Science Program
The headlines recently are disturbing; more American deaths by drug overdoses than car accidents. More than 72,000 Americans died from drug overdoses in 2017, including illicit drugs and prescription opioids—a two-fold increase in just a decade, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
The opioid crisis has been portrayed in the news as a health challenge of tremendous proportions and the subject of looming lawsuits against drug manufacturers and distributors.
The Central Colorado Humanists will present the Sunday Science program “Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention” Feb. 3 starting at 10 a.m. at the Salida Scout Hut, 210 East Sackett Ave., presented by Jessica Eaddy, M.S.W. and Mike Orrill. Jessica Eaddy is the External Relations Strategist for the Colorado Consor-tium for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention at the University of Colorado. Mike Orrill is the Regional Health Connector, serving Chaffee, Lake, Fremont, and Custer counties, connecting health and wellness entities with the resources to meet their objectives. He is also the Administrator of the new Chaffee County Resource website, and was the pastor at the Salida Presbyterian church for many years. Their talk will touch on the science of addiction, national and local statis-tics, treatment options, myths about the opioid issues, and more.
CCH sponsors Sunday Science presentations on the first Sunday of each month. Each presentation is informative and features a science topic under-standable by both scientists and non-scientists. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. so the program can begin promptly at 10. A discussion and light refreshments will follow the talk. Admission is free, while donations to help defray costs are always welcome
