A Brief History of Climate Science with Dr. Christian Shorey
The lecture is free to the public and refreshments will be served
Dr. Christian Shorey, Professor of Geology and Geologic Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines, to present “A Brief History of Climate Science.”
Dr. Shorey’s research focuses on paleoclimatology, the study of ancient climates. Although climate science has been a politically controversial topic recently, its origins are divorced from such politics and go back a few centuries. By exploring the story of the scientists and science involved in climate, a clearer picture of what we know and how we know it will be revealed. Dr. Shorey examines the growth and chemistry of cave formations called speleothems, which are structures like stalagmites. Speleothems act as “climate archives,” telling us about past temperatures, the plants that lived above the cave, and the water infiltration and chemistry of the cave.
