The "Friends of Pike" is a non-profit organization, comprised of people who sponsor storytelling re-enactments of the exploration of the Louisiana Purchase by the Zebulon Pike Expedition. Storytelling sessions are FREE to schools and various other organizations, but donations are appreciated.
The story of the expedition is told by Tom Rollings, a retired teacher and historian with 25 years of experience teaching in public schools at various levels of education.
The group hopes to generate interest among young people for learning about the accomplishments and mission of Zebulon Montgomery Pike by attending storytelling sessions and joining clubs that discuss Pike's Journey. Clubs engage in artwork and Geography, as well as American History.
My Science Guy
Tutoring and Instructional Services, LLC
719-359-5210 chris@myscienceguy.com
Owner: Chris Marrone
My name is Chris Marrone and I am the owner of My Science Guy Tutoring and Instructional Services LLC. I have been teaching science in the Colorado Springs area for 6 years and am now in Chaffee County. I have a Bachelors degree in Biology and a Colorado Teacher’s license.
With the rising number of students in the classroom and the decrease in public funding, I saw the need for aiding students in meaningful and engaging experiences in another way. By offering small group lab classes, students are able to gain knowledge and experience in the science lab in a small group of no more than 12 students. In this way, the individual attention each student deserves is achieved.
While classes are catered mostly to the home school population; camps over breaks, homework help, private tutoring, and family classes are available for home school and public school students and families.
Classes at My Science Guy allow students to experience a different social environment as well and students are encouraged to work as a team in the process of scientific investigation.
It is my hope that I will be able to assist you and your child in your educational endeavors. I am here to support you. With that thought in mind if you have any questions about anything we offer, or have any suggestions please feel free to contact me.
Window Cleaning RX, LLC
719-964-8055 chris@windowsrx.com
Owner: Chris Marrone
Now is the time to make your windows shine! The weather is now being consistently favorable in our area, and window cleaning is on the to do list. Did you know that your windows stay clean longer when they are professionally cleaned? When the solution we use cleans away the dirt, it leaves a shine and for a time may repel other dirt longer than cleaning with popular do it yourself solutions. Call us today to get a free estimate or to schedule your cleaning service.
It is time to join the Chamber of Commerce for another year. Watch for dues statements in your email. Remember, payment schedules are possible. Thank you for your past support!
Marketing Committee Update
The first set of social networking classes are over with about 40 people taking advantage of them. We will offer another set in late June or in September. June classes would be two evenings of 2 hours each. If you are interested, please call the chamber. We need at least 15 people to participate.
A social networking coordinator has been hired to maintain a constant presence on facebook, twitter and help with other interactive marketing.
Although the chamber staff did attend the marketing bootcamp, individualized training will happen mid June to make the chamber staff more knowledgeable and efficient in social media.
A campaign to bring more attention to our off season attractions and activities has begun.
All of these activities are aimed at promoting more year round tourism.
Village Profile Map
BUENA VISTA AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE WILL PUBLISH NEW COMMUNITY MAP…. Interested in advertising on the map? Call the chamber and we will help set up an appointment with our ad sales rep. In addition to the 10,000 maps that are distributed in our community and throughout the state, there is a link to the Village Profile Site from our website.
FYI……we distribute about 8 different kinds of maps here at the Chamber and we give every one of them away. There is a constant demand for maps both from locals and visitors.
Chaffee Connect Update
Progress is being made toward bringing better broad band service to Chaffee County. Based on the survey results and much work done by the Chaffee Connect staff, we are moving closer to meeting with potential developers to bring sufficient and more efficient broad band service to our area.
Thanks to those of your who filled out the survey sent last week. There is still time to send it in.
Watch for an announcement about this as we move to the next step in this challenging situation.
Trailfest
The Trailhead and Trailhead Cycle & Ski renew their annual TrailFest celebration of the American Hiking Society's National Trails Day® Saturday, June 2, 2012 - National Trails Day. The national theme for this year is "America's Largest Trailgating Party!"
The slogan is an open invitation for all Americans to get outside and connect with local hiking clubs, parks and recreation departments, and state and federal land management agencies to experience everything the great outdoors has to offer.
The focus of TrailFest is information and recruitment with numerous land management, volunteer advocacy and service groups represented. A family oriented interpretive hike through the Fourmile Travel Management area outside Buena Vista is planned. There will also be biking, trail maintenance, and healthy outdoors activities suitable for all ages and members of the local Backcountry Horsemen chapter may offer rides on Trailhead Cycle & Ski’s on-site TrailCenter™. We'll fire up the grills and have free healthy food courtesy of the Trailhead and Trailhead Cycle & Ski.

Incidentally Gibby Gregg
So you like stories of the past and like learning about interesting people that came before us?? Buena Vista Heritage will be presenting a new production this summer called “Incidentally Gibby Gregg”. Gibby Gregg was the editor of the predecessor of the Chaffee County Times for a long period of time and wrote a book called, “Incidentally Gibby Gregg”.
The production is not so much about Gibby—although Tom Tomson will introduce himself as Gibby—as it is about some of the anecdotes in the book as well as other documented stories of our area.
Productions are June 8th & June 23rd at the Buena Vista Heritage Museum. Call 395-8458 for information and tickets.
FYI… The Collegiate Peaks Music Festival has been cancelled for this year. Watch for other music events being planned for that weekend, July 28-29.

Be in the 4th of July Parade. Line up is at 10:00 on East Main Street. Join in the fun. No entry fee, no prizes, just lots of fun.
Chamber Facelift
April 30th through May 7th the Buena Vista Chamber was closed for painting and remodeling. An eight man prison crew showed up and worked quickly so we could reopen to the public in a timely manner. In fact, the job took less time then we had budgeted. These renovations would not have been possible without the Buena Vista Correctional Complex supplying the crew headed by Sgt. Deland. Sgt. Deland had several helpful suggestions and appeared to be somewhat of a father figure to the inmates. The inmates seemed to enjoy working on the historic building; they took pride in their work and also suggested easier ways to do the job. They carefully hand sanded the old floor before putting the new varnish on.
A BIG thanks goes out to Ron Haarberg who devised the ‘plan’ and order of events so that everything flowed smoothly. He was here every day with his tools, labor and ideas. He made the job so much easier for the chamber staff and helped put everything back together when the work was done. The following businesses made the remodeling a realty and they also deserve our appreciation: Alpine Lumber, Comfurt Gas, Hi Valley Pump, the Town of Buena Vista, and Valley Home Furnishings. A final big thank you goes out to the Mountaineers, the chamber ambassador group, who helped to pay for all the beautiful improvements. If you are in town, stop by and check us out. The original St. Rose of Lima is looking good at 132 years of age.
