Gold Rush Days is a Buena Vista event that has been going on for over 30 years. The Chamber of Commerce took it over a number of years ago to save the event and has used it as a major fundraiser for the Chamber. Last year we netted about $9,000. This money, along with your dues and other fundraisers helps keep the chamber in business so businesses, the community and events can be promoted. Support for Gold Rush Days and the Duck Race is an extra step for businesses to support our community.
$10,000 Duck
For Gold Rush Days
This year’s Duck Race ticket buyers will have a chance to win $10,000 or maybe just $500. 1,000 ducks will be put into Cottonwood Creek on Sunday, August 15th at 2:30. As soon as the ducks have been put in the creek, a number between 1 and 1,000 will be drawn. If that duck crosses first, and someone has purchased that ticket, they will win $10,000. Additionally, the first duck that crosses the finish line whose number has been purchased will win $500. Other prizes will be rewarded for other winners. GET YOUR DUCK RACE TICKETS at the Chamber, the banks, from board members and other participating businesses.
This year’s Duck Race Sponsors are Colorado East Bank & Trust, Collegiate Peaks Bank, Rainbow Lake Resort and Sangre De Cristo Electric.

Comment Period Underway for Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s Over The River
If you are for or against or agree or disagree, it is time to officially comment.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) recently began accepting public comments on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s proposed temporary work of art Over The River. Christo has proposed suspending 5.9 total miles of silvery, luminous fabric panels high above the Arkansas River along a 40-mile stretch between Salida and Cañon City in central Colorado. If approved, the project would be displayed for two weeks in 2013, at the earliest.
The Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is part of the permitting process for Over The River, and the document contains a comprehensive analysis of the project’s potential impacts and benefits, as well as possible mitigation measures. Public comments will help to influence the BLM’s final decision on the proposed temporary work of art.
You can email comments to co_otr_comments@blm.gov, or fill out a comment form www.blm.gov/co/st/en/fo/rgfo/planning/otr/comment_form.html. Comments can also be faxed (719-269-8599) or mailed (BLM Royal Gorge Field Office, OTR Comments, 3028 E. Main St., Canon City, CO 81212).
The BLM will also accept written and oral comments at four public meetings. Each meeting will begin with an open house at 4 p.m. followed by a formal public comment session beginning at 6 p.m. Details are as follows:
