PACIFICA QUARTET TO PLAY AT SALIDA ASPEN CONCERTS ON JULY 22
The Pacifica Quartet will play works by Haydn, Beethoven and Shostakovich at its concert July 22 at Salida High School Auditorium, 26 Jones Avenue.
The quartet, which is now in residence at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, is making its debut at Salida Aspen Concerts.
The program begins at 7:30 p.m. and the interview with the players starts at 6:45 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door, but students K-12 get in free, and adults bringing students pay only $10.
This is the 41st consecutive season that Aspen Music Festival and School has brought international stars to Salida.
The Pacifica Quartet has toured throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Australia. It was named “Ensemble of the Year” by Musical America in 2009. From 2009 to 2012, the Pacifica was quartet-in-residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Franz Joseph Haydn is considered the “Father of the String Quartet.” His pupil, Ludwig van Beethoven, is considered by musicologists to have written 16 quartets that have never been surpassed in history.
Dmitri Shostakovich completed his quartets despite interference from the Soviet government.
The Pacifica will play Haydn’s “Quartet in G Major, Op. 76, No. 1,” and Beethoven’s “Quartet No. 16 in F major, Op. 135,” the last work he wrote. The Shostakovich piece is “String Quartet No. 3 in F major, Op. 73.”
Tickets and information are on www.salidaaspenconcerts.org.

Trip to the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory Thursday, July 20 9:30 am – 3:30 pm
GARNA has organized a visit to the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL), an internationally renowned center for scientific research and education located near Crested Butte. GARNA last visited RMBL in September 2015 and although we had a terrific time exploring and hearing from RMBL director Ian Billick, many of the researchers were gone by that time. This year we timed the visit to take place in the middle of summer when projects are in full swing. The day’s activities will include touring the facility and hearing about the current studies taking place there. We’ll also have the opportunity to explore the historic buildings around the town of Gothic. In addition, the group will get involved by helping with a service project pulling weeds along the road to Gothic. Lunch will be provided. Ecologist, educator, outdoor enthusiast and GARNA program committee member Max Keller will lead the group and help coordinate the day’s events. Gothic is roughly 7 miles from Crested Butte (and about a 2-2.5 hour drive from Salida). GARNA is not arranging for overnight stays so participants may want to explore lodging options (in Crested Butte or Gunnison) or camping options in the surrounding area for either the night before (Wednesday) or Thursday night after the program. For those participants who are going for the day, GARNA will organize a carpool from Poncha Springs and more information will be provided upon registration. The cost of the trip is $15 for GARNA members; $20 for non members. Online registration is available at http://garna.org/calendar/rmbl-7-20-17/. Fees support coordination and promotion of GARNA programs. For more information, please email GARNA at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 719-539-5106.

The 4th Annual #BVStrong Community Dinner will be Monday, September 25, 2017. Join your friends and neighbors at dinner down the middle of Main Street, with the majestic Collegiate Peaks as our backdrop.
We are a community that’s diverse in opinions and ideas; yet on this night, we focus on all we have in common as we eat together at one table. We embrace the people we love and celebrate those we’ve lost, cheer our accomplishments, and anticipate the return to “just us” as the summer season winds down. All are welcome, and there’s a seat for everyone at our table. Our beautiful views are surpassed only by the beautiful people who call BV home!
