Hike in the Alpine Tunnel Historic District with GARNA Saturday, July 15
The Alpine tunnel under the Continental Divide completed the Denver, South Park, and Pacific Railroad’s route from Denver to Gunnison in 1882. GARNA has organized hikes on the trail from Hancock to the East Portal many times, this hike completes the journey over Altman Pass (the Continental Divide) to the West Portal where volunteer groups have helped the USFS restore some of the 1880’s railroad buildings. This hike will be approximately eight miles round trip with an elevation gain of 1,200 ft., including 400 ft. back up from the West Portal to the divide. Although not technically difficult, this is an all-day outing and is appropriate for experienced hikers. The hike will take place on Saturday, July 15 from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
The route crosses a 12,000 ft. pass (twice) and, because it is lightning season, this outing is highly weather dependent and subject to rescheduling to another weekend or an earlier start time. The hike leader is John McCarthy. John is a GARNA Board member, one of the GARNA Hiking Club founders and organizers, a Salida Museum volunteer and a railroad history buff. He has presented numerous programs on local railroad history to area youth and adults.
The cost of the program is $10 for GARNA members, $13 for non-members. Pre-registration is required and space is limited. Online registration is available at garna.org/calendar/alpine-tunnel-hike-7-15-17. Fees support coordination and promotion of GARNA programs. For more information, please email GARNA at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 719-539-5106.
GARNA Summer Nature Camp in Buena Vista Wednesday, July 12, 19 and 26
GARNA is offering a Nature Camp in Buena Vista this summer for five through nine year olds. Nature Camp is a day camp designed to explore public lands in and around Buena Vista. Campers will hike, bird watch, collect bugs, experiment, journal and much more while appreciating the joys of nature. Some of the topics covered will be animal adaptations, Arkansas River habitats, and plants in the high country. Camp will take place three Wednesdays July 12, July 19, and July 26 from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Camp will convene each week at the Buena Vista Community Center and a shuttle will take campers to each day’s field trip location. Visit http://garna.org/programssummary/yelp/nature-camp/bv/ for more information and to register. Contact GARNA at 539-5106 or email@example.com for more information.
Trip to the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory Thursday, July 20 9:30 am – 3:30 pm
GARNA has organized a visit to the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL), an internationally renowned center for scientific research and education located near Crested Butte. GARNA last visited RMBL in September 2015 and although we had a terrific time exploring and hearing from RMBL director Ian Billick, many of the researchers were gone by that time. This year we timed the visit to take place in the middle of summer when projects are in full swing. The day’s activities will include touring the facility and hearing about the current studies taking place there. We’ll also have the opportunity to explore the historic buildings around the town of Gothic. In addition, the group will get involved by helping with a service project pulling weeds along the road to Gothic. Lunch will be provided. Ecologist, educator, outdoor enthusiast and GARNA program committee member Max Keller will lead the group and help coordinate the day’s events. Gothic is roughly 7 miles from Crested Butte (and about a 2-2.5 hour drive from Salida). GARNA is not arranging for overnight stays so participants may want to explore lodging options (in Crested Butte or Gunnison) or camping options in the surrounding area for either the night before (Wednesday) or Thursday night after the program. For those participants who are going for the day, GARNA will organize a carpool from Poncha Springs and more information will be provided upon registration. The cost of the trip is $15 for GARNA members; $20 for non members. Online registration is available at http://garna.org/calendar/rmbl-7-20-17/. Fees support coordination and promotion of GARNA programs. For more information, please email GARNA at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 719-539-5106.
Hike in the Alpine Tunnel Historic District with GARNA Saturday, July 15 8:00 am – 4:00 pm
Led by Leadville local Glenda Dunn, GARNA is hosting a short hike (3 to 4 miles) in an area locally known as Alpine Meadow or “Hills are Alive” in the Leadville Mining District east of Leadville. The area covers sub-alpine, alpine and a bit of tundra. The group will be hiking on an old mining/jeep road mostly uphill and then downhill on the return. This area is known for its abundance of wildflowers and we hope to see Blue Flax, Columbine, Jacob’s Ladder, Purple Fringe, Alpine Sunflowers, Monkshood, Wild Delphiniums, and Old Man of the Mountain! We will have a snack at the top and expect to return to the cars about 2:00 pm. The road to the wildflower site is accessible for all vehicles. Glenda Dunn has been a Leadville resident since 1962. She is a high-altitude, organic gardener and wildflower enthusiast. She has been hiking and backpacking in the Leadville area and the Flat Tops for more than 50 years. The cost of the tour is $5 for GARNA members; $8 for non members. Space is limited. Online registration is available at http://garna.org/calendar/leadville-wildflower-7-27-17/. Fees support coordination and promotion of GARNA programs. For more information, please email GARNA at email@example.com or call 719-539-5106.

We are a community that’s diverse in opinions and ideas; yet on this night, we focus on all we have in common as we eat together at one table. We embrace the people we love and celebrate those we’ve lost, cheer our accomplishments, and anticipate the return to “just us” as the summer season winds down.
