GARNA’s Wildness Series – Wildlife: Winter Range Habitat
Saturday, February 17 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Why are we seeing declines in elk, deer and other wildlife populations on our public lands? Join Salida Ranger District, USFS wildlife biologist, Stephanie Shively, on a hike/snowshoe above Deadhorse Gulch, as she sheds light on Winter Range Habitat and human impacts on wildlife. This field trip builds on Stephanie’s Sunday Science program for the Central Colorado Humanists on Sunday, February 4, but is open to anyone. Deadhorse Gulch is up CR 175 (Ute Trail) at CR 181 near the Beasway Trailhead. Please register online at http://garna.org/calendar/winter-range-habitat-2-17-18/.
GARNA’s Nature Series – Winter Waterfowl
Saturday, March 3 @ 9:30 am – 11:30 am
Sands Lake State Wildlife Area
Next time you take a walk around Sands Lake, wouldn’t it be nice to be able to tell your kids and grand kids what types of birds are making Salida their year-round home? Because Salida-area lakes do not usually freeze during the winter, this makes for great habitat for winter waterfowl. Join GARNA and Sally Waterhouse for an introduction to identifying duck and geese species at Sands Lake State Wildlife Area. This program is open to all ages and will be a great activity for kids and families. Please register online at http://garna.org/calendar/winter-waterfowl-3-3-18/.

GARNA’s Nature Series – 2016: A Birding Big Year
Thursday, March 15 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Buena Vista Community Center
Join GARNA and our Birding Club to learn how Buena Vista resident Christian Hagenlocher took a unique approach to birding’s most well-known competition – the ABA Big Year. In 2016, Christian traveled on a budget from Alaska to Florida to fill in the gaps in his life list of birds, seeing over 750 species in total, becoming the youngest birder to pass the 700 mark. He interviewed birders he met along the way, gathering stories and blogging about his adventures at thebirdingproject.com. Later, Christian traveled the country, teaching people about birds with a focus on engaging young people with birds and photography. Come hear Christian’s stories, see his bird and landscape images, and learn about what birds have to teach us – whether you are a beginner or expert birdwatcher. Code Enforcement Corner:
1.) Reminder to all business that if you conduct any business in the corporate boundary of Buena Vista you are required to get a Buena Vista Business License. This includes CPA’s and Home Occupations.
2.) With spring coming remember to keep all sidewalks clear of snow. If you have a business on the highway you need to keep your sidewalks open, even after the plow goes through.
Dear Friends of the Buena Vista School District,
The district is conducting a survey asking the community to identify and prioritize the needs of our school health program. This information is used to create a Local Service Plan required by the State of Colorado. This survey will help to identify needs and allocate resources needed to provide the best possible health care services to school-aged children grades pre-K though 12th grade.
Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective.
Lisa Yates, Superintendent
