Buena Vista Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center is Now Accepting Letter of Intent for Three New Board Positions.
Nominations for the Buena Vista Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center Board of Directors members are now being accepted. Each Director shall be elected for a period of (3) years to ensure continuity of policy. Three (3) members of the Board shall be elected annually by September 22. The term of each Director shall commence in October following the election and the Organizational Meeting. Each elected officer must be a Chamber member or employed by a Chamber member, in good standing throughout their term on the board. We will make every attempt to ensure that the slate of candidates is chosen from a wide geographical area, e.g. home-based businesses, Main St., Hwy 24, etc and that there are representatives from a variety of business sectors. Microloans now available for start-ups and entrepreneurs: DENVER – Thu., August 3, 2017 – The Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Office (OEDIT) today announced the launch of the new Colorado Microloans program (CML) – a special initiative of the Colorado Economic Development Commission designed to provide small loans to start-ups and entrepreneurial small businesses that are underserved by traditional debt markets.
“The Colorado Microloans is another example of the commitment Colorado has made to supporting economies of rural Colorado,” said Stephanie Copeland, Executive Director of OEDIT. “This program will help fuel entrepreneurship and job growth for communities that need it most.”
The Microloans program is meant to provide capital to small businesses through small, character-based loans, particularly in rural Colorado regions.
“This program will infuse capital into markets that need it most and help businesses scale and create jobs,” said Jeff Kraft, Director of Business Funding & Incentives at OEDIT. “Local lenders will administer the loans since they are embedded in the communities and know the businesses best.”
Eligible businesses must be a for-profit entity that meets the following conditions:
- The recipient business can have no more than 15 employees at the time the loan is made.
- The recipient business must be documented by the lender as an “underserved small business.”
- The recipient business must be located in Colorado with a majority of employees working in Colorado.
- In the judgment of the lender, the recipient business has a substantial possibility to become a long-term viable business in Colorado that can grow to employ more than its owners.
- The recipient business does not meet underwriting standards for banks and other more traditional lenders.
These loans can range between $5,000 and $50,000, with a maximum interest rate of 2% plus the prime rate the day the loan is made. The loan term may be up to 8 years.
The loan program will be administered by the Colorado Lending Source, First Southwest Community Fund, and over a dozen regional Rural Loan Funds spanning across rural Colorado counties.

Renowned bassist and composer Edgar Meyer returns to Salida Aspen Concerts Saturday, August 12.
Meyer played at Salida Aspen in 2006, 2013 and 2015. This Saturday, he will perform with his violinist son George Meyer, who is making his Salida Aspen debut. The program begins at 7:30 p.m. at Salida High School, 26 Jones Avenue. Edgar and George Meyer will be interviewed on stage at 6:45 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door, but students K-12 get in free, and adults bringing students only pay $10. This will be the final concert of the 2017 season.
Edgar Meyer composes classical, bluegrass, newgrass and jazz music. In his recordings and premieres, he often performs with Yo-Yo Ma, probably the best cellist of the day, and with Joshua Bell, one of the top violinists. George Meyer graduated from Harvard in 2015 and went on to get a Master’s degree in violin at the Juilliard School the following year. He, too, is a composer. He has performed his own compositions at Chamber Music Northwest (Portland, Oregon), the Telluride and RockyGrass bluegrass festivals, and the Savannah Music Festival.

Habitat Manipulation for Land Health and Wildlife Management on Wednesday, August 30 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Is there a way to lure the deer away from our city streets and yards? For over ten years Colorado Parks and Wildlife, other state and federal agencies, private landowners and wildlife conservation groups have been involved in a cooperative, multi-phase habitat enhancement endeavor, the Large-scale Habitat Enhancement Project. The goal of the project is to improve overall land health, enhance habitat for wildlife species, re-distribute big game on a large scale, reduce conflicts with wildlife and reduce fuels/risk of catastrophic fire. To date, over 2,000 acres have been treated, two water sources have been created and two springs have been rehabilitated in the Upper Arkansas River Valley. District Wildlife Manager Kim Woodruff will lead a GARNA outing to learn and see how the program is the designed to improve and enhance the health of the land and local wildlife through the skillful manipulation and management of the area’s vegetation. Kim will provide an overview and discussion of the program followed by a visit to several of the treatment sites that CPW has established. Participants will have an opportunity to view hand-thinning and hydro-axe treatments firsthand. The group will meet in Howard and then carpool to different treatment sites. Additional information will be provided to those who register. The cost of the program is $5 for GARNA members, $7 for non-members. Fees support coordination and promotion of GARNA programs.
