Behind the Scenes at Brady’s West

Wednesday, April 19

Have you ever wondered how large, year-round garden centers grow their colorful annuals, vegetables, and herbs? Join GARNA for an “insider’s” tour of Brady’s West Garden Center in Salida. Brady’s carries a huge variety of items: grass, vegetable, and flower seed, organic and conventional chemicals and fertilizers, trees and shrubs, annuals and perennials, roses and grasses, drip systems, house plants and patio furniture, top soil and mulch, flagstone, hot tubs, spas, a full range of gardening tools, worms, pottery, art and gifts, potting soil, compost, pond supplies and more!
They have over 90,000 square feet of greenhouse space where they grow high-quality annuals, perennials, and organic herbs and vegetables. Laura Brady will take you through their extensive operation and perhaps even give away some of their secrets to their beautiful and healthy nursery products. The program will be held from 10:00 until 11:30 am. The cost is $3 for GARNA members and $5 for non-members. Online registration is available at http://garna.org/calendar/bradys-4-19-17/

BV street constructionProject Update for the Week of April 9, 2017:

STAY INFORMED: This is for the US 24 Buena Vista Project

Construction work continues on the Buena Vista Enhancement Project along US 24 between Mill Street and Crossman Avenue. Activities include the installation of new concrete curbs, gutters, utility conduits, sidewalks and other roadway features. Paving operations on the east side of US 24 are underway.

  • Traffic is currently shifted to the west side of US 24, with one lane open in each direction. There is a right lane closure on southbound US 24 at the City Market, and one of the two entrances to the business is also closed.
  • Please note working hours are now Monday thru Saturday from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, as weather allows.
  • Cottonwood Avenue, located to the east of US 24, is closed due to culvert repairs.
  • In the future, crews will require a full closure of the US 24 / Main Street intersection. We will provide further updates in our subsequent emails.
  • Within the month of April, crews plan on extending the project limits for repaving operations. The repaving will take place from Johnson Village to the north of Buena Vista (roughly from mile point 209 to mile point 213). Additional information will be provided in next week’s update.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions or comments.

STAY INFORMED: The best way to receive regular updates about the construction progress is to sign up at CDOT’s website www.codot.gov/projects/us-24-buena-vista-enhancement-project. If you have questions or comments, contact the project team at the information hotline, 719.398.0819 or by email at us24buenavista@PublicInfoTeam.com.

Salida Historical Town Tour with Absolute Bikes Adventures

Sunday, April 23

Salida burned down three times in the late 1800s so town officials declared that all new buildings had to be built from brick. Thanks to that decision, Salida now has one of the biggest and best-preserved downtown historic districts in Colorado. On the Salida Town Tour, we will ride bikes through the historic district and hear lively stories about the legends and history of the valley, the railroad, the downtown district, the brothels, the gunfights, the ghosts and more. We will also visit the Salida Museum! The guides are John McCarthy, GARNA Board member and railroad history buff, Jack Chivvis, local artist and historian, and Larry Kovacic and Bob Campbell with the Salida Museum. The cost of the program is $15 for GARNA members, $20 for non-members. Price includes 2-hour historical town tour, entry into the Salida Museum (normally $5 for adults), and a Salida trails map courtesy of Absolute Bikes (a $13 value). Online registration is available at http://garna.org/calendar/bike-town-tour-4-23-17/.
