Ever wonder what life as a woman at the turn of the last century was like? Or should we say the life of a shady lady? Come visit the Madams of Central Colorado, an educational historical reenactment performed upstairs at the Buena Vista Heritage Museum, 506 East Main. Buena Vista’s Cockeyed Liz tells you how she ended up in the business and her arch rival Belle Brown talks about the drugs and depression. Laura Evens describes her wild life in Leadville before she settled in Salida and became Colorado’s longest operating and most beloved madam. Two of Laura’s girls, Silverheels Jessie and LaVerne, describe Laura’s good deeds and what an evening in the bordello was REALLY like. Lillian Powers talks about life in the cribs on Sackett Street. Although tastefully done, this performance is not recommended for children under 13 due to the subject matter. The madams will only be in town June 11, July 3, August 14 and September 11 of this year. Their lively discussion begins at 7pm but the doors open at 6:30pm with Bev Werner playing honky tonk music at the piano. Tokens (tickets) cost $15, are “good for one” and are on sale at the Buena Vista Chamber, the Buena Vista Museum and on line at www.buenavistaheritage.org. Proceeds benefit Buena Vista Heritage a 501c3 maintaining 5 historical properties in Chaffee County. For more information call 719-395-8458 or 719-395-6612 or visit http://www.buenavistaheritage.org
